A movement for addressing the scientific and technological concerns of Bharat was initiated in the serene campus of Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) by a few eminent scientists, under the able leadership of Prof. K I Vasu (then the Professor of metallurgy in IISC, Bangalore) in the early eighties. Later in 21st October1991, Vijnana Bharati was launched officially at Nagpur as a professional cum popular movement in the field of science and technology. From this humble beginning, the movement spread its wings across the nation. Vijnana Bharati conducts its activities through 27 independent units functioning in various parts of country
Taking cognizance of the Vijnana Bharati’s contribution in the field of Science & Technology, Govt. of India (Prime minister,Sri Manmohan Singh) awarded the movement with Nehru- Prize in the year 2007. Vijnana Bharati was also awarded by Govt. of India in recognition of the outstanding contributions in the field of science communication among masses.
